Words of Wisdom from a Child of the ‘Sixties

“Grandmothers of the world, now and in the future, read Patty Friedmann’s book! It is a fount of wisdom that takes no prisoners but nourishes heart and mind. If I wasn’t her age, I would claim her as my own grandmother. As it is, I’ll have to sigh and be a man, that is to say, clueless about the complexity of that knowledge, but happy to share its rewards.”
– Andrei Codrescu, author of New Orleans, Mon Amour

“An extraordinary book—candid, irreverent, compassionate, loving, generous, and bizarre—on the final, and most brilliant, phase of a woman’s life. Patty Friedmann uses details that detonate our memories and reinforce the deeply hidden bonds that tie us together as old, wise women. One of my favorites is her memory of visiting ‘Billy’s grandmother’ — ‘And the ice trays were covered with melted-and-refrozen Neapolitan ice cream…’ Oh, Lord, yes. The woman we didn’t want to become. But did.”
– Wendy Crisp, author of 100 Things I’m Not Going to Do Now That I’m over 50 and When I Grow up I want to Be 60

ONE KNIFE, ONE FORK, ONE SPOON

This novel has a big thread that will upset a lot of people. The narrator Renna is a woman in her forties who seduces her teen son’s best friend. But that is not the main point of the novel. Renna has problems that drive her into that relationship, and they are the big focus. Her kids are spoiled and difficult; her husband is boorish, judgmental, and racially insensitive. She needs a life where all she has are one knife, one fork, and one spoon.
